Evidence Based Nutrition

The science shows what can be done in theory. We’ll help you discover what you can do in practice. It’s probably more than you think.

Our Focus

Our initial focus is on high blood pressure, but our nutritional approach has been shown to help prevent and manage heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and other conditions as well.

Our Story

Change from within

Our founders have decades of experience working in and consulting to the healthcare industry. If they learned one thing in that time it was that we can’t expect different results if we keep doing the same things.

A person does not need protein from meat... my best year of track competition was the first year I ate a vegan diet.

Food

What will I be eating?

What will I be eating?

Our program is designed to help you eat more whole, plant-based foods. That just means trying to limit any processed foods (which are often high in salt, sugar and unhealthy fats) as well as reducing your intake of meat, fish and dairy products which can increase blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol. This may seem extreme at first but there are still hundreds of healthy tasty foods available to you. Most people who try it find it surprisingly enjoyable and easy to maintain given time and support.

Do I have to cut out all animal products?

Do I have to cut out all animal products?

No. You don’t have to do anything. We won’t ship you any animal products, but if you want to get them elsewhere that’s fine. What we will do is share information with you to help you make an informed decision about how far and how fast you want to move towards purely plant-based eating. The good news is that there are lots of scientific studies that show that you’ll get a bit healthier for every step you take in that direction. We’ll help you to find the mix that works for you.

Where will I get my protein from?

Where will I get my protein from?

Plants. It’s simply not true that we need meat, fish and dairy for protein. (In fact, it is a myth that has been supported by about 150 years of meat and dairy industry marketing!). As celebrities like Venus Williams, Beyoncé, Carl Lewis, Mike Tyson and Arnold Schwarzenegger can testify, it’s not only possible to get all your protein from plants its preferable. Why? Because the protein in meat, fish and dairy comes with a bunch of things you don’t need while plants are rich in vitamins, fiber and other important nutrients most people aren’t getting nearly enough of.

What about calcium?

What about calcium?

The milk industry spends tens of millions every year trying to convince us that we need milk for bone health. In fact, independent studies have shown that increased milk consumption leads to more bone fractures in later life. By contrast, bone health is best in places where people drink little or no milk and get their calcium from peas, beans, nuts and other plants.

What risks are there in adopting a plant-based diet?

What risks are there in adopting a plant-based diet?

One ‘risk’ is that your health may improve to such an extent that your physician needs to reduce the dosage of the medications you are taking. Don’t worry though. Our health coaches will use the data you provide to monitor your progress and we’ll alert you if we think you need to consult your regular care team. We can also provide them updates directly if you’d prefer. Other than that, the risks of eating only plants are extremely low compared to the risks of eating a standard western diet. That said some people may want to take a few cheap supplements to be doubly sure. Our coaches will help you make these decisions shortly after joining.

Privacy

What data will Brightplate collect?

What data will Brightplate collect?

To confirm you are eligible for the program we will ask your employer whether you have a history of high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes. When you sign-up for Brightplate we will also ask for your name, email address and cell phone number. We will then ask you a handful of questions about your lifestyle and recent medical history. Beyond that, the only data we will have on you will be what you provide from your home testing and journal entries in the Brightplate app.
